The Mount Lyell Mine has been in operation for over a century.
At present, underground sub-level caving mining is being carried out at 900 meters below the original surface (450 meters below sea level).
It has produced more than 1.4 million tonnes (Mt) of copper (Cu) and 43 tonnes of gold (Au) till date.
Since its acquisition by Sterlite, its capacity has increased from 2.0 million tpa to 2.6 million tpa in 2005 - 06.
It produces approx 30,000 tonnes per annum of contained copper (Cu) in concentrate.
It provides 7% of the copper concentrate requirement of its parent company Sterlite’s copper smelter in Tuticorin, India.
JORC compliant reserves of approximately 9.68 million tonnes of ore at 1.31% Cu.
It is a major Exporter and contributor to economy of the state of Tasmania.
Winner of State Export Award for 2001 and 2003.
